Whittington Castle is a historic and picturesque heritage site in Oswestry, Shropshire. It’s a famous attraction that has a steady stream of visitors all year alongside being a popular wedding venue for many. Due to its popularity, the site heavily emphasises having effective car park management for its visitors. The castle relies on financial benefits from the castle’s parking but was facing several issues with the previous parking solution.
The castle’s car park has a self-managed payment machine that lacked enforcement. It often meant visitors bypassing payment caused financial loss. On top of that, the car park machines frequently broke down, adding more frustration for castle visitors and more parking income loss for the castle. Due to a lack of enforcement, vehicles had started to park for extended periods with no payment affecting parking space’s availability for other paying visitors.
The castle was actively trying to increase and improve the revenue from parking while catering to visitor’s needs. Due to the location of the castle, good signal was a major issue that posed as challenge for smooth operation.
The other major challenge here was the historic site’s preservation status. Due to restrictions on digging depth, we had to find alternative ways to securely install post-mounted signage. We also took extra care to ensure all equipment was installed in a way that complied with the castle’s regulations and maintained the integrity of the surroundings.
Improvised Parking Machine: We removed the existing machines and installed a new one that is more dependable with touchscreen display. It made the payment process simpler and more convenient for castle visitors and even reduced maintenance hassle.
Signal Resolvent: As signal was a major issue in this location, we had to put more focus on resolving it. So, we quickly figured it out and fixed the issue by installing a high gains aerial to ensure a better signal that didn’t disrupt the operation.
Member Vehicle Coverage: We wanted good maintenance enforcement for visitors to the castle car park. First, we ensured member’s vehicle belongings were registered properly. It helped prevent unnecessary charges while keeping the enforcement smooth.
Parking Enforcement: We introduced Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to monitor unpaid parking, protect against financial loss, and maintain availability for visitors who stick to the regulation.
Clearer Signage and Alternative Installation: We took the initiative to redesign signage that fits well with the castle’s regulations while making it effective. To tackle the installation challenge, we worked our way around to prevent ground digging, ensuring compliance to protect the castle’s operation.
The implemented new system increased parking revenue by 40% and allowed the castle to gain additional funds in a stable manner. Our strategies have also supported Whittington Castle to maintain its site and stay true to its preservation efforts. The visitors now also experienced a smoother parking process as machines are now more reliable.
